Close and Far Away

               2002 by Philip J. Eggerding

I sniff the hint of musk that fills the air above her fur.
An inch above her fur.
A breath above her fur.
So close I need to be or else it's gone.
So close but far away.
It's close yet far away.

A lover's flame still flickers faintly in her hidden heart.
But then there is her past--
A dark and dreadful past,
Diminishing the light until I cannot see.
So close I have to be.
To see her, distantly.

She's in my heart and soul and yet I cannot feel her mind.
It's locked and tightly bound.
Its key cannot be found.
The prisoner within has kept it safely hid.
Its hiding place is near
Yet kept afar by fear.

So I will wait and see if things beyond my grasp will come.
I will not break the door.
To bare the thing she hoards.
It's not my place to open painful wounds anew.
So, close to her I'll stay.
So close, yet far away.

Until the day when opened minds can finally touch in love.
I'll hold my questions back.
And simply stroke her back,
All shades of black and white against my gray.
So close and far away.
So close, yet far away.

For now... the only way.
